Fiji Labor Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry says the Wairiki Ferris wheel accident should put pressure on authorities to release a report into the accident at Showcase last year that claimed the life of a 21-year-old woman.

Mr Chaudhry said there were reports the ride went out of control in Wairiki after the engine powering it developed problems.

He said there were media reports that 10 men were needed to control the Ferris wheel so the terrified passengers could descend safely.

FBC News also received footage showing people jumping off the Ferris wheel, fearing for their lives.

Chaudhry said Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh or Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew should release the report on Showcase’s death and that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions should charge someone for dereliction of duty.

On November 23 of this year, Acting Prosecutor Nancy Tikoisuva said the Showcase ferris wheel report would be published the following week, but two weeks later no report came to light.

“Who is responsible for these terrifying incidents on the Ferris wheels? We are told that Ministry of Employment inspectors certify that the machines are fit for purpose before they can operate,” Chaudhry said.

“However, these accidents continue to occur. How long will it be until we know who is responsible for the Taveuni accident?

“In the interests of accountability and public safety, it is imperative that the report into the Suva accident that occurred in June last year is released without further delay.

“The public has a right to know why these accidents continue to happen.”

FBC News spoke to Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh who said he will issue a statement on the issue this afternoon.
